[ARCHIVED] Hurricane Jose Update 10:00 AM 09/19/2017

What to expect...

Forecast and Discussion:

Tropical Storm Warnings for south coastal sections of RI, MA including MA east coast to Hull

Jose was located about 350 miles SSW of Nantucket at 5am. Winds are near 75mph with a pressure of 973mb or 28.73” It is moving north at about 8mph. Very little change has been noted with Jose overnight. On satellite, It is almost devoid of any tropical characteristics now and resembles a winter extratropical system we would normally see in the winter. The wind field has spread out dramatically as it becomes mainly extratropical tonight,

Tropical storm force winds will reach eastern Long Island and SE Cape Cod/Islands later today. Peak winds will be Wednesday with winds gusting at 35-45mph in SE coastal MA. Winds over the Cape and Islands could gust near 55-60mph during the closest pass of Jose’s center on Wednesday especially at Nantucket which will be closest to the center of circulation. A storm surge of 1 to 2 feet are possible on the east and SE facing beaches on Wednesday and perhaps a foot or less on the south side. Rainfall of 2-4” is possible with the highest on Nantucket. At this point it is better to treat this as a nor’easter without snow. The only factor to consider is that we are fully leafed out and we are a bit more vulnerable to power outages than during the winter season. Jose will likely meander around offshore for a day or so, but in much weaker form.
