TOWN OF FALMOUTH STORM RECOVERY UPDATE
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2026

4:15 PM

Town of Falmouth Public Works and Public Safety personnel have been working non-stop to clear the roadways. At present, approximately 50% of the roadways have been cleared. Eversource is reporting 78% of properties are without power at this time.

A warming center has been opened at the Falmouth High School, 874 Gifford Street Extension. Anyone needing transportation assistance to the Falmouth warming center or one of the regional shelters should contact the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) at 508-385-1430 and select option 2. The warming center does is not provisioned with food and it will close at 9:30pm. The warming center cannot accept pets.

For those requiring overnight accommodation, two Regional Emergency Shelters are currently open to the public:

Gus Canty is not available as a warming center due to loss of power combined with a generator failure.

The process to clear roads and restore power is taking longer than anyone would like due to a number of factors. An estimated 155 downed trees in roadways need to be cleared so plows can get through. Some of the downed trees are entangled in power lines requiring Eversource crews to de-energize the lines before the trees can be removed. The volume and weight of the snow, combined with the speed with which it came down, caused a number of mechanical failures for DPW vehicles and private vehicles hired for snow removal.

Road clearing activities are also being delayed by non-essential traffic. Police Chief Jeff Lourie reports that first responders, plow operators and utility crews are being delayed by a high volume of traffic.

Town officials have requested assistance through Barnstable County and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agencies. Massachusetts Department of Transportation will have plow crews in Falmouth on Wednesday morning to assist DPW with snow removal.

Eversource reports 87 crews have been deployed to Falmouth to restore power. Eversource has not yet given an estimated timeframe to restore power to most Falmouth properties.

“Our public works and public safety personnel are putting forth an extraordinary effort over an extended period of time to clear the roadways and meet the most acute public safety needs,” said Town Manager Mike Renshaw. “It is going to take some time to complete all the work necessary to return to normalcy. We thank the community for your patience and ask everyone to look out for their neighbors in the interim.”

Additional updates will be provided as we know more through via the Town website www.falmouthma.gov, Police and Fire social media accounts, and traditional print and radio outlets.
